It's a monster!

There are few things more joyous than watching a band getting high on just playing together.

Here's the Edgar Winter Band on the BBC's "Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1973 having a ball.

The EWB and Frankenstein on the OGWT

So, who's in the band?

Well, Edgar obviously, on synths, sax and LA percussion, Rick Derringer on guitar, Dan Hartman on bass and Chuck Ruff on drums. They're obviously having fun - they're good and, boy, do they know it! It's lovely to see the eye contact between everyone - they're really getting off on each other's playing.

And remember, they only come out at night!

  1. Is it just me or does Edgar look utterly ridiculous with that piano slung around his neck?! I wonder how his back has fared -- I know I couldn't do that night after night!!

    1. It was 1973, everything and everybody looked to be in varying degrees of ridiculousness!

Edgar is playing 3620 duophonic keyboard into an ARP 2600P v3.0. John Paul Jones also had one, but had the good sense not hang it around his neck.

Also check out the cover of "They Only Come Out at Night", which might be the creepiest album cover ever.

    2. As the keyboard is just a remote unit, I think it's more likely that Hartman and Derringer were carrying more weight than EW. Especially Derringer with that Les Paul Custom.

    1. Like a cheap hotel -- no ballroom!

So weird that Dan Hartman is the same guy who did "Instant Replay" and "I Can Dream About You".

    2. Hartman's career was quite something - started off with the Winter Bros, went into disco big time and then did all sorts of stuff. On that journey, he was involved with Muddy Waters, David Johansen and James Brown, to name but three legends.

    3. Hartman also had a guitar suit...

    4. Wow. I thought I'd seen it all when it comes to guitars. Thank you for that!

  3. I have it on good authority -- my 11-year-old self when this hit -- that the lyrics to that 'monster' riff are "Goddamn motherfuckin' son-of-a-BITCH, goddamn motherfuckin' two-bit snitch".
